Egypt is expected to ask Israel to consider a truce with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Sunday that his top mediator, Omar Suleiman, will travel to Israel after Independence Day celebrations this week.

Israeli sources said Suleiman was not expected to arrive until May 11 at the earliest.

Suleiman has been talking to Hamas and other armed Palestinian factions about ending hostilities in Gaza.

Hamas has offered Israel a six-month truce with the condition it lift the economic embargo on Gaza. Israel has refused to enter a formal agreement with the radical Islamists, but signaled it could hold its fire if Palestinian attacks from Gaza and arms smuggling into the territory cease.
