Hillary Rodham Clinton suspended her presidential campaign.

The New York senator, in making the announcement Saturday in Washington, urged her supporters to help elect Barack Obama, her Democratic Party rival.

“I endorse him and throw my full support behind him,” she said.

“The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States.”

Clinton garnered nearly 18 million votes during her quest for the nomination against the Illinois senator.

She had been the preferred candidate among Jewish Democratic voters in the primaries.
