The Conservative movement plans to open an egalitarian yeshiva in Uganda.
The school, located near the southeastern town of Mbale, will educate men and women from the Abayudaya tribe, a group that converted to Judaism in the 1920s.
Funds for the school came from the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism and its youth arm, United Synagogue Youth. Rabbi Jerome Epstein, USCJ’s executive vice president, and USY International President Adam Berman, traveled to Mbale for the dedication.
Gershom Sizomu, the community’s rabbi, was ordained in May at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles.
