Barack Obama’s pick for a running-mate has strong ties to Israel and the Jewish community.

Obama’s selection of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) on Saturday, the eve of the Democratic convention in Denver, ends months of speculation.

Biden, the chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, has been close to Israel and the Jewish community since he was first elected to the Senate in 1972. He visited Israel and met Prime Minister Golda Meir not long before the 1973 Yom Kippur war, and he says it left a lasting impression as to Israel’s uniqueness and vulnerability.

His son married into a Jewish family.
