The United States has requested the extradition of the head of one of Israel’s largest crime families.

Yitzhak Abergil was arrested Sunday along with four other members of his crime family whose extraditions are being sought by the United States. The request was sent Aug. 22 to Israel.

Abergil is accused of ordering the 2003 murder of an American drug dealer, as well as money laundering and extortion. The four others, including Abergil’s brother Meir, also are accused of being members of a criminal organization, drug trafficking and racketeering.

Abergil already had been in police custody for three weeks in connection with the murder of an innocent bystander to a mob hit on a Bat Yam Beach last month. He could face charges in that murder, which would delay his extradition.

Extradition procedures could take up to a year.
