A group of more than 240 Jewish studies scholars issued a statement backing Barack Obama.

The scholars signed a statement saying “Senator Obama shares many of the values and positions held by the majority of Ameriocan Jews” and urging Jewish voters to “see through the partisan attacks and recognize how much they have in common with the senator.”

Obama, they wrote, “embodies the Jewish hope for a society in which race, ethnicity, and religion are not barriers to achievement.”

The signatories include Steven M. Cohen of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Hasia Diner of New York University and Susannah Heschel of Dartmouth University.
