JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Sudanese convoy carrying weapons bound for Gaza was bombed in January, Sudanese officials said.
The airstrike took place in a remote desert area of eastern Sudan, the officials said, according to Reuters. CBS news reported Wednesday on its Web site that the Israeli Air Force carried out the attack on the 17-vehicle convoy, killing 39 and injuring many civilians. The weapons were intended for Hamas, the report said.
Other reports in the United States and Egypt said the United States may have carried out the attack, according to Reuters.
Israeli officials on Wednesday did not confirm or deny whether Israel was involved in the attack, the daily Ha’aretz reported. Israel Radio reported that Sudanese state minister for highways, Mabrouk Mubarak Saleem, said 800 people were killed in the attack and that the 17 trucks were filled with people, not arms, including Sudanese, Eritreans and Ethiopians.
Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister told a conference in Herzeliya on Thursday, "Israel hits every place it can in order to stop terror, near and far," in an apparent reference to the Sudan strike.
