JERUSALEM (JTA) — Ehud Olmert has withdrawn a request to postpone court hearings in three corruption cases.
Israel’s former prime minister had requested that the hearings be postponed due to his upcoming scheduled prostate cancer surgery. His attorneys had requested that the hearing be rescheduled from a proposed ending in mid-August to beginning in mid-September.
Three Supreme Court justices called Olmert’s request "nonsense" and said he was trying to stall the proceedings "indefinitely" during a meeting Wednesday with attorneys.
A hearing in each of the five investigations must be held before Attorney General Menachem Mazuz can make a final decision on whether to indict Olmert. Mazuz has indicated that three of the cases — the Talansky/cash envelopes case, the Rishon Tours double-billing case and the Investment Center case — will likely result in indictments.
Following the hearing with the three-judge panel, Olmert’s attorneys withdrew their appeal.
