JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli officials said that an Israeli submarine passed through the Suez Canal during a drill, a report denied by Egypt.

Israeli defense officials reported Friday that the sub sailed to the Red Sea via the Suez Canal, where it docked in Eilat for a short time, according to Reuters.

Israel owns three Dolphin-class subs, which are believed to carry nuclear missiles. The drill participation is believed to be a show of strength to Iran.

On Saturday, an Egyptian official denied that Israel sailed through Egyptian territory, saying that Cairo will not assist Israel in efforts to attack Iran.

If Israel is not allowed to use the Suez, it would have to sail around Africa, which could take weeks.
