JERUSALEM (JTA) — The bus driver who is accused of causing one of Israel’s worst traffic accidents was charged with manslaughter.

Edward Gelfond was indicted Tuesday in Beersheba District Court on 24 counts of manslaughter.

Twenty-four visiting Russian travel agents were killed and some 33 others were injured in the accident last December.

Gelfond is alleged to have been driving well above the speed limit when he attempted to pass another bus on a narrow, winding road near Eilat. The bus broke through a guard rail and fell into a ravine.

Gelfond was not in the courtroom for the indictment.
