JERUSALEM (JTA) — Some 250 asylum seekers, many from Sudan and Eritrea, were ordered released from Israeli prisons.
Interior Minister Eli Yishai announced the releases on Sunday, saying the prisoners need not be held anymore since the law they had violated was repealed that day.
The Gadera-Hadera rule had prevented the refugees from living and working in central Israel.
Meanwhile, thousands of people mounted a demonstration in Tel Aviv Sunday to protest government plans to kick migrant workers out of the country.
Last week the government decided to delay by three months the expulsion of foreign workers and about 150 of their children born in Israel.
