JERUSALEM (JTA) — Terrorists plotted to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Egypt, an Egyptian daily reported.
Egyptian security services told the Al-Masri Al-Youm daily newspaper in a report published Saturday that three members of a terrorist cell were captured in July and confessed to plans to assassinate Ambassador Shalom Cohen and bomb his home, as well as the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.
The three men were arrested after a robbery of a Cairo jewelry store, reportedly to help finance their terror plans, which they formulated in 2007. The newspaper reported that they had not been successful in carrying out the attack due to tight security.
The terror cell, whose members said they trained in "Palestinian Army of Islam in the Gaza Strip" camps, also planned to bomb Muslim and Christian holy places and tourist sites, as well as the gas pipeline between Egypt and Israel, according to the report.
