Rubashkin can pray at rebbe’s grave

(JTA) — A former Agriprocessors official awaiting trial can pray at the grave of the Lubavitcher rebbe before Rosh Hashanah, a judge ruled.

Sholom Rubashkin can be driven from Postville, Iowa, to New York City to pray at the grave of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson in Queens, even though he has been on supervised release from jail since February.

U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade granted Rubashkin’s request on Tuesday. He was expected to travel to New York the following day.

Agriprocessors, once the largest kosher slaughterhouse in the United States, closed following a major immigration raid by federal officials in May 2008. Rubashkin is scheduled to go on trial in October.

Rubashkin had been held in jail for three months after prosecutors argued that he was a flight risk to Israel.
