NEW YORK (JTA) — The president of the Dominican Republic met with Chabad-Lubavitch leaders in Brooklyn.

During a meeting Tuesday evening, Leonel Fernandez thanked the leaders for installing a permanent Chabad representative in his country two years ago.

“If there’s anything you need in terms of support from the government, you have my full support," Fernandez said. "We want to be helpful in any way we can.”

The president was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez. They are in New York for the United Nations General Assembly meeting.

About 200 Jews live in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo, where the Chabad house is located.

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, chairman of the Lubavitch educational and social services division, presented Fernandez with a silver-embossed shofar as a gift.
