(JTA) — A World War II monument in southern France was painted with anti-Semitic graffiti.
The monument in memory of the deportation of Jews from Marmande, in southwest France, was vandalized Aug. 4 with words in red paint that read "lies," "Zionism," "interests" and a dollar sign, the European Jewish Press reported.
A swastika, as well as white supremacist epithets, were found three days later on a telephone booth near the memorial, the French news agency AFP reported.
French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux expressed “horror and sadness” at the attacks.
Several other anti-Semitic incidents have been reported in recent weeks in France.
Some 27 gravestones were vandalized last month at a Jewish cemetery in southern France. Also, swastikas and anti-Semitic epithets were found on the walls of a synagogue in central France and on the storefronts of several Jewish-owned stores in Paris.
