JERUSALEM (JTA) — The United Nations Security Council will debate in July the prospect of Palestine becoming a member state of the United Nations.
The discussion is set for July 26 during the Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East, Reuters reported, quoting German Ambassador to the U.N. Peter Wittig, the Security Council’s president this month.
Wittig suggested the discussion will not be determinative. He called it "an occasion to explore the various options that might exist on the Palestinian side."
The issue of U.S. membership for a Palestinian state is likely to come up again during the U.N. General Assembly in September. That resolution, which likely will be put forth by the Arab League, will call for a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with eastern Jerusalem as its capital.
