JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Arab League will ask the United Nations to grant full member status to the Palestinian Authority.

The organization will seek the upgrade to full member nation, which includes recognition of a state with eastern Jerusalem as its capital, at the General Assembly meeting in September, Reuters reported, citing a draft statement from an Arab League meeting in Doha, Qatar on Thursday.

The League must submit an official request, which it announced that it would do.

The U.N. Security Council will debate at the end of July the prospect of Palestine becoming a member state of the United Nations, during the Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East.
