WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama reportedly approved the delivery of 55 bunker-busting bombs to Israel.

President Bush launched the approval process for the GBU-28 Hard Target Penetrators in 2007, Newsweek reported, and Obama approved their delivery in 2009. The rockets were delivered to Israel in early 2009.

Israel for years had asked for the bombs, which are capable of reaching the underground redoubts where Iran is believed to be developing nuclear weapons.

Bush initially rejected the request in 2005, partly because the U.S. military establishment believed that such a delivery would ratchet up tensions with Iran.
