Israeli Elections Collection


In advance of Israel’s 19th elections on Jan. 22, National Library of Israel has compiled an online collection of Israeli election materials, including photos, videos and campaign posters since the countries first elections in 1949.

Below are a sample of ISraeli election videos available online, along with JTA coverage of that year’s election, many of which are featured in the National Library’s collection.

Today’s national elections started here at six o’clock in the morning with a Sefardic Jew asking for the privilege of being the first voter. He was granted his request by the election committee at one of the station.

1977 Menachem Begin’s Likud party becomes first to topple Labor dominance; Instructional voting video for soldiers.

Meanwhile, votes are still being counted. When the soldiers ballots are in, Likud may find itself with two more seats in the Knesset and Labor with one more.

1988 Fate of Next Government Hangs on Outcome of Shas Party Session

Shas, whose spiritual guide is the former Sephardic chief rabbi of Israel, Ovadia Yosef, emerged from the Nov. 1 elections the largest of the four religious parties and the third largest faction in the Knesset.
