The 55th Annual Grammy’s Music Awards kicked off last night in Los Angeles, with Jewish Canadian singer Drake winning best Rap Album of the Year, and the indie pop band Fun. taking home two Grammys for Song of the Year and Best New Artist.
Drake’s album, “Take Care,” brought him a Grammy last night before the show started, and was up against Lupe Fiasco, Nas, The Roots, and Rick Ross. Although he’s previously been nominated 10 times, this is Drake’s first Grammy. He was also nominated for Best Rap Performance for his song “HYFR” and Best Rap song for “The Motto.”
Fun.’s smash hit, “We Are Young,” won best song of the year, and the band’s Jewish lead singer, Jack Antonoff thanked all the devoted fans after winning the Grammy for Best New Artist.
“We’ve been touring for 12 years and we haven’t made money for a very long time,” he told the crowd excitedly, extending a shout out to girlfriend Lena Dunham.
Fun. also performed at the Grammy’s, playing their hit “Carry On” in an indoor rainstorm, and they were introduced by actor Neil Patrick Harris, who said, “As legendary gangsta rap icon Katharine Hepburn once said, ‘If you obey all the rules, you don’t have any fun.'”
Other notable Grammy winners were English folk band Mumford & Son’s, who won the night’s big prize of album of the year for “Babel,” Gotye, whose hit, “Somebody That I Used to Know” took the Grammy for Record of the Year, and Adele, who won her seventh Grammy for her live performance of “Set Fire to the Rain.”
