(JTA) — A man in Wisconsin was charged with a hate crime for allegedly punching two men who were having a conversation in Hebrew.

Dylan Grall, 23, was charged with battery and two counts of hate crime for the incident on a Madison street early Saturday morning, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Grall allegedly struck the men in the face after demanding they speak English and swearing at them, the Madison police report said, according to local media outlets.

The alleged attacker denied hitting the men despite a witness account saying Grall did strike them. Grall said he told the men to speak English and believed they were speaking Spanish, according to the police report.
