JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Palestinian man was shot and killed in the West Bank after opening fire on soldiers at a checkpoint, the Israeli military said.
Israeli soldiers from the Border Police manning a checkpoint at the Tapuach Junction returned fire after the assailant squeezed off at least six shots with a handgun near midnight on Monday, according to the Israel Defense Forces. A soldier was wounded in the leg and evacuated to an Israeli hospital.
Last week at the same junction, a 19-year-old Palestinian was arrested after soldiers discovered he was wearing a suicide vest containing 12 pipe bombs. He was believed to be on his way to perpetrate a suicide attack in an Israeli city.
“The two latest attacks are concerning,” IDF spokesman Lt.-Col. Peter Lerner said in a tweet. “At the least they are a bad omen of bad things brewing.”
