JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two Palestinians were arrested at a West Bank checkpoint for allegedly planning to carry out a terrorist attack.

Israeli security forces stopped a car near Ariel on Route 5, a major highway that runs from the West Bank to the suburbs of Tel Aviv, after seeing suspicious objects inside, according to reports. A gas tank and an explosive charge were found in a bag in the vehicle.

A bomb disposal team was called to the scene, Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

The driver said in an initial interrogation that he was on the way to carry out a terrorist attack, Haaretz reported.

The driver and his passenger are from the West Bank city of Tulkarem, Israel’s Channel 2 reported.
