Larry David was the muse behind the ever-eccentric George Costanza in "Seinfeld", so it is only fitting that Jason Alexander, who portrayed Costanza, should be taking over David’s character in his Broadway play, "Fish in the Dark."
And in classic L.D. fashion, he wasn’t going to bow out quietly. At the Tony Awards ceremony at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night, Alexander and David presented the award for Best Musical, (which went to "Fun Home"), and the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator and star, made sure to distinguish between being replaced and having Alexander step in for him, “You’re a stepper, not a replacer,” said David.
David also theorized that his play had not received any Tony nominations as a result of anti-Semitism. “… The anti-semitism that denies the nomination to a Larry David, or a Harvey Weinstein,” joked David.
Alexander “stepped in” at the Cort Theatre last night.
