JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli troops returning fire by Palestinians shot and killed a gunman and injured two others in the West Bank, the Israeli army said.

The gun battle took place Tuesday in the village of Turmus Ayya, near the Jewish settlement of Shiloh.

On Wednesday morning, a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was apprehended by Israeli security forces after arriving at a Border Police checkpoint in Hebron with a knife, according to the Israel Police. The teen was disarmed and detained at an entrance to the Cave of the Patriarchs, a site that is holy to Jews and Muslims.

Several Palestinian stabbing attacks and attempted stabbings on Israeli security forces have taken place in the vicinity of the site in the past several weeks.
