(JTA) — A 95-year-old man who served as a paramedic in the Auschwitz death camp is fit to stand trial, a German court has ruled.
On Tuesday, the higher court of Rostock overruled a lower court decision that Hubert Z., who is accused of being an accessory in the murder of at least 3,681 people at the Nazi camp, was too frail to undergo a trial, Haaretz reported.
Hubert’s last name has been withheld due to German privacy laws.
A sergeant in the SS, Hubert served in Auschwitz from October 1942 to September 1944, according to the indictment. He is not accused of being directly involved in any murders, but of knowingly participating in the running of the camp’s activities.
In July, 94-year-old Oskar Groening, known as the “bookkeeper of Auschwitz,” was sentenced to four years in prison after he was convicted of the accessory to murder of 300,000 people in Auschwitz.
