Holocaust survivor Hermina Hirsch, 89, will get to cross something off her bucket list that few people can, performing the national anthem at a Detroit Tigers game. Hirsch was chosen to perform after a video of her singing the anthem was posted online by her granddaughter and subsequently went viral.
“At my age, I figure that this would do it,” the longtime Tigers fan and Southfield, Michigan-based mother of three told CBS Detroit. “I don’t want to die before I sing at a baseball game.”
Hirsch will sing at Comerica Park at the May 21st game.
When asked whether she’ll be nervous performing for such a big audience, Hirsch—who regularly performs in her weekly Holocaust survivor meetings at the local JCC and synagogue choir—said, “If I lived through the concentration camp, it couldn’t be that bad.”
Her granddaughter, Andrea Hirsch, who posted the now-famous clip online told CBS Detroit, that her and her family were very excited. “At first when I told her that her video went viral and there’s so many people that caught wind of her story, she didn’t really understand…just couldn’t believe how it progressed. I didn’t even believe this could happen.”
