Japanese Gymnast Delivers Twist on Jewish Prayer

Jewish twitter was set abuzz yesterday during the women’s gymnastics event, and for once the subject was not Team USA’s Jewish sensation Aly Raisman. The unlikely topic of conversation was Sae Miyakawa, a 16 year-old Japanese gymnast whose floor routine was set to a klezmer take on 18th century Jewish prayer “Gesher Tzar Me’od.”

This is the second consecutive games in which a traditional Jewish tune has featured in the floor routines, after Raisman won a gold medal in London 2012 with a routine set to Hava Nagila. Unfortunately Miyakawa failed to reach the final of this year's competition.
