Jerusalem — Rabbinical authorities met here recently to discuss whether it is permissible to warm the planet on Shabbat.
Israeli Ashkenormic Chief Rabbi Daven Loud maintained that global warming is permitted on Shabbat, since it is merely warming and not cooking—an activity strictly prohibited to observant Jews on the Sabbath.
Other rabbis disagreed.
“Once you allow global warming,” warned Rabbi Herr Splitter, of the Orthodox, Hotel Workers and Teamsters’ Union, “it can easily lead to boiling temperatures, and boiling is clearly forbidden on Shabbat.”
Asked how the problem of global warming on Shabbat might be solved, one rabbi suggested, “Find a non-Jew to warm the globe for you.”
