(JTA) — A 12-year-old Palestinian boy reportedly was killed by Israeli security forces during clashes in the West Bank.

Citing the Palestinian news agency Maan, The Times of Israel said Mohiyeh al-Tabakhi was killed Tuesday evening in the town of al-Ram as Israeli forces fired rubber bullets during the clashes there.

The official Palestinian Wafa news agency reported that al-Tabakhi died from cardiac arrest after a rubber bullet hit him in the chest.

The Israel Police said they were investigating the Palestinian claims, according to The Times of Israel.

The police disputed aspects of the Palestinian media coverage of the clashes, particularly denying reports that Israeli troops opened live fire. They said the forces had limited their response to stun grenades and tear gas.

Palestinian media and Israeli police also were at odds over what precipitated the clashes.

Palestinian reports said they broke out when Israeli forces entered the town and Palestinian youths hurled rocks and empty bottles at the troops. Israeli police said they were attacked with a Molotov cocktail while returning the body of a Palestinian terrorist.

The IDF later said that there were no soldiers in the area where the Palestinians say the boy was killed, according to the Jerusalem Post.
