Another boat carrying foreign activists will set sail for the Gaza Strip to show it can break Israel’s sea blockade.
The “Free Gaza” movement will leave from Cyprus on Wednesday, according to reports.
The approximately 20 left-wing activists on board will include several doctors and Mairead Corrigan-Maguire, the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner for her efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland.
Also on board will be an Israeli Arab member of Knesset, Jamal Zahalka, chairman of the Balad Party.
“It is my duty as a politician who slaves away night and day against the siege, to board that boat and work towards ending this inhumane siege,” he told Ynet. “1.5 million people are currently being imprisoned. This is an insufferable situation and it’s time to break the world’s deafening silence on this issue.”
In August, two boatloads of activists sailed in and out of Gaza without interference from Israel’s Navy. Activists who remained in Gaza, including Lauren Booth, the sister-in-law of Quartet Middle East envoy Tony Blair, were only able to leave earlier this week when Egypt opened a land crossing as a goodwill gesture.
