JERUSALEM (JTA) — Several Israeli military units were called up for a surprise live-fire drill in Israel’s North.
The units were called to the snap drill on the Golan Heights on Wednesday reportedly to test the army’s readiness and alert level.
The drill, which simulates the outbreak of a war in the Golan, was ordered by IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz.
The Israel Defense Forces said the drill, while a surprise to the units, was planned in advance and does not represent a change in the military’s alert level.
A civil war is raging in neighboring Syria and Israel has been threatening to attack Iran’s nuclear installations.
