Daniel Estrin writes a really interesting piece for the AP today in which he documents the decline of the kessoch (a.k.a. kessim), citing the Israeli rabbinate and youth apathy as factors. JTA has been covering the struggles of the kessim since 1985.

Estrin’s article references Jacques Faitlovitch (pictured above in 1955), scholar of Ethiopian languages whose activities with the Jews of Ethiopia (then Abyssinia) were covered by JTA. See for yourself.
