At least 150 American Jewish educators and lay leaders in the field will attend the World Assembly on Jewish Education, to be held in Jerusalem next August, it was announced here today by Philip W. Lown, president of the American Association for Jewish Education, and chairman of the American delegation to the Assembly.
The Assembly is being convened by the World Conference of Jewish Organizations. The principal purpose of the parley, it was announced, are: 1. To review the situation of Jewish education in the diaspora; 2. To highlight the significance of Jewish education for creative Jewish survival; 3. To discuss the feasibility of organizing an international bureau for the exchange of information and to promote cooperation in the advancement of Jewish education.
The American Association for Jewish Education, Mr. Lown said, is now preparing a survey of Jewish education in all countries outside Israel, to present to the Assembly. He said also that, while Jewish education in the United States faces difficulties in regard to “the depth and continuity of Jewish learning, the teacher shortage and the inadequacy of funds,” the American Association hopes nevertheless “to be of assistance to other and smaller Jewish communities, whose need is more desperate than our own.
