Twenty Jews were listed among the first casualties resulting from the blasting of the King David Hotel yesterday. The roster included eight killed, four wounded and eight missing.
Among the dead was Julius Jacobs, under-secretary of the Palestine treasury and the highest ranking Jew in the Palestine civil administration. Jacobs served with the Jewish Brigade in World War I, which aided in the liberation of Palestine from the Turks. He entered the Palestine civil service after his demobilization. He was a member of the Order of the British Empire.
Another highly placed Jewish civil servant who was killed was Victor Levi, assistant secretary of the treasury. Like Jacobs, Levi also served in the British army during the first World War and remained in Palestine after his demobilization. Other dead included: Leo Baum, assistant to the postmaster general; Zvi Shimaki, a district officer recently promoted to the secretariat; Yehuda Janovsky; Yehuda Mirmelstein; Shmuel Yeshaya; and Claire Russo.
The known wounded are Mary Grinberg, Rose Anna Piktinsky, Erich Sanger, and Herman Feldman. The missing are Lea Bachrach, Shulamith Marx, Eliahu Mani, A. Baum, A. Goldschmidt, A. Rosen, and Richard Marcus.
