Registration in Jewish religious schools in New York has been increased by about 1,000 pupils during the past year, Harry H. Liebovitz, president of the Jewish Education Association, told more than 500 members of the organization at its annual meeting in the Hotel Astor today. This increase would have been greater if the association had more funds with which to publicize its campaign of “education for Jewish education,” he said.
More than $2,000,000 are spent annually by New York parents to give their children a Jewish education, Mr. Liebovitz said, and the association is doing everything in its power to improve the standards of teaching in the schools. It promotes this object, he said, through a board of license which grants certificates of qualification to Hebrew teachers. During 1937, 102 licenses were granted. Other speakers were Judge Louis E. Levinthal of Philadelphia, Mrs. Gabriel Hamburger, president of Ivriah, and Bernard Semel.
Mr. Liebovitz was re-elected president. Mark Eisner was elected vice-president, and the following were reelected: Jonah J. Goldstein and Samuel Rottenberg, vice-presidents; Bernard Semel, honorary secretary; Rabbi David de Sola Pool, secretary to the board of directors, and Nathan Flugelman, treasurer.
