With pledges of $1, 376, 500, the Jewish community launched its 1959 Allied Jewish Appeal campaign here at an inaugural dinner at the Warwick Hotel. Three hundred key AJA supporters at the dinner contributed to the initial sum. This also included amounts pledged in advance gifts since the beginning of the year.
F. Gordon Borowsky, general chairman, hailed the result as a presage of victory in the campaign. Abba Eban, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, made his farewell appearance here. “The existence of Israel now assures Jewish migrants of a land of their own in which to settle and start life over, ” he said. “The country needs the help of American Jews to carry out its mission and continue its development while guarding against the threats of its enemies. “
