A gift of almost $3,500 from West German President Gustav Heinemann to the Anne Frank Foundation was presented this week to the Foundation’s executive committee by West Germany’s Ambassador Dr. Hans Arnold. The gift will be used toward reducing the deficit of the Foundation which maintains the Anne Frank House here.
The building where the 13-year-old Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II until they were finally discovered by the Nazis has been a tourist shrine since the diary of Anne Frank was published after the war. Anne and her sister, Margot, died in Bergen-Belsen in 1944. Their mother died in Auschwitz and their father survived the holocaust. The building has fallen into disrepair for lack of funds. The Foundation says its aim is to fight racial and all other forms of discrimination.
