Six Jews were believed to have been killed and a number of others injured when a block of flats was directly hit and demolished yesterday morning by a bomb from an enemy plane which managed to evade the London defenses.
The building was beside a street market, which was crowded when the bomb fell. One stall was covered by debris and several customers were injured by falling masonry.
The entire neighborhood turned out to aid the rescuers, and soldiers also arrived. An army colonel climbed a ladder to seek victims in the building’s debris. Air Raid Precautions men, aided by a Royal Air Force officer, broke into the back of the building and rescued four men, one of whom waved and shouted “Thank you!” as he was carried away on a stretcher.
Twelve others had been rescued by late this afternoon.
