High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope today approved one of the lowest schedules of labor immigration in recent years, providing for issuance of 770 certificates during the four months between April and July.
Of the total, 620 are assigned to the Jewish Agency for Palestine and 150 reserved for the Government Immigration Department.
The four-month schedule is a departure from the previous six-month schedules and is authorized by an amendment published in the Government Gazette empowering the High Commissioner to approve schedules covering less than a half year.
The abnormally low schedule threw a damper on the preparations for the Coronation celebrations in which the Palestine Jewish community had been engaged.
The new schedule provides for issuance of an average 192 certificates monthly, as compared with the 250 per month under the last schedule, 667 a month between April and October, 1936; 540 a month between October, 1935, and April, 1936; and 1,334 a month between April and October, 1935.
Immigration schedules are nominally based on the estimated economic absorptive capacity of Palestine.
