A Belgian magistrate began examining a request for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to be tried for crimes against humanity, local officials said. Two people described as being “of Arab descent” filed the request under a 1993 law, which allows Belgian courts to prosecute foreign officials for human rights violations committed outside Belgium.
