A group of doctors in the United States identified the genetic mutation that causes familial dysautonomia, a neurological disease that affects Ashkenazi Jews in disproportionate numbers. One in 3,600 Ashkenazi Jews is affected by the disease, which leads to problems with heart rate and blood pressure, and a failure to develop taste buds and tear properly.
