A Jewish would-be messiah named Menachem may have been a role model for Jesus, according to an Israeli researcher. Menachem, a leader of an ancient Jewish group called the Essenes, saw himself, as Jesus later did, as the suffering son of God, writes Israel Knohl, the head of the Bible Department at the Hebrew University.
