The sum of $250,000 was pledged by Abraham Goodman, New York Jewish leader, to the Brandeis Institute, at Brandeis, California, toward the construction of an Academy — a college preparatory school — on the grounds of the Institute, 35 miles from Los Angeles. Groundbreaking for the initial structure is slated for the Fall.
The pledge came at a Beverly Hills dinner where Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the American Jewish Committee, extolled Brandeis Institute for its remarkable achievement in helping college youths and adults find Jewish identity. He also lauded the high quality preparatory school being planned at Brandeis Institute saying it would “in my view, bring about a well oriented leadership group for American Jewish communities — a knowledgeable leadership group — and will send into universities and into faculties Jews, committed Jews, who in turn will influence for commitment Jewish students who come to these universities.”
Mr. Goodman has been a member of the Institute’s board of directors since its inception 27 years ago and has observed the effect of this Jewish leadership training program through the years. He was impressed with surveys that have indicated that the summer college programs. which give college students a one-month experience at the Brandeis Institute, have a long term impact. “If so much can be done in the course of four weeks, how much more can be accomplished in four years” Mr. Goodman stated in announcing his pledge.
Dr. Shlomo Bardin, executive director and the man who founded the Institute with the support and encouragement of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis. said The Academy will be based on the Jewish ethic and will require Hebrew as a second language. “It will be a high level school academically and will be open to all on a non-sectarian basis.”
