Only native-born white male citizens of British ancestry will be accepted in “progressive” schools of Alabama, for the establishment of which nearly $7,500,000 is provided in the will of Harvey G. Woodward, Birmingham iron magnate who died recently. Religious teaching, foreign languages, fraternities, interscholastic athletics and examinations will also be barred from the projected schools.
No school is to be established nearer than fifteen miles to a town, according to the will. If at the end of twenty-five years the schools fail of the purposes set forth in the Woodward will, the proceeds are to be given to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while the other half is to be used to aid students under 25 years of age to complete their education.
