John L. Savage, American irrigation expert, left Israel today following a month’s visit during which he supervised plans for the development of the country’s water resources.
The Israel Government has appropriated approximately $1,600,000 for the reflamation of orange groves abandoned by Arabs who fled Palestine during the war, the finance Ministry announced. An additional $600,000 has been appropriated for the development of irrigation systems for reclaimed groves.
The Agriculture Ministry revealed that since March, 1949, a total of 31,000 dunams (7,750 acres) of 100,000 dunams of abandened orange groves has been reclaimed. It is expected that an additional 5,000 dunams will be rehabilitated by this summer.
