The U.S.-British-French agreement on an arms policy for the Near East was this week-end called the “first break in the wall” of American refusal to sell arms to Israel by the American Zionist Council. In a statement, the Council said the tri-power policy “gives satisfaction” to all friends of Israel, adding that because of a vagueness in the announcement of the policy it will be necessary to wait for implementation before its full value can be assayed.

In a similar statement, Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, expressed gratification with the Allied policy. Mr. Blaustein declared that “by opposing the use of force or the threat of force to alter frontiers” in the Near East the Estern powers “have effectively contributed to the guarantee of peace” in the area.
