Xavier Vallat, anti-Semitic French lawyer, has been appointed head of the General Commissariat for Jewish Affairs by the Vichy Government, it was announced today.
The commissariat is responsible for the application of laws and decrees regarding the Jews in unoccupied France. The body was formed some time ago but had remained without a head.
Shortly after the commissariat was formed it was believed that an unofficial Jewish councillor would be attached to the Commissariat.
