The series of anti-Zionist persecutions initiated here towards the end of February continues. Further arrests of Zionist leaders and functionaries, raids on Zionist premises and confiscation of archives, are reported today although, as hitherto, none of the searches has resulted in the discovery of anything incriminating against individual Zionists or Zionist bodies.
The “Hashomer Hazair,” a young workers’ Zionist society, is suffering particularly, because it has been accused of Communism. In the South Bucovina district of Burdujeni, the local president of the Zionist organization, Dr. Rabinowitsch, and the representative of the Jewish National Fund, Simon Gruenberg, were arrested, and their archives confiscated. Both men were released following the intervention of the Parliamentary Jewish parties, although the archives have not yet been returned in spite of the order of the Government.
Strong representations have been made in Bucharest with a view to putting an end to the persecution of Zionists.
The present attempt to suppress Zionism in Roumania, is believed to be a fulfillment of an intention announced by Premier Vaida Voevod in an interview which appeared in the Paris paper, “Le Journal”. “The Roumanian Government,” Premier Vaida Voevod was reported to have declared, “is determined to suppress excesses both from the Right and the Left, and to tolerate neither anti-Semitic student demonstrations, Soviet agitation, nor Zionist agitation among certain Jewish elements in Bessarabia.”
