Arab United Command Discusses Syrian ‘defenses’ on Israeli Border

A five-member delegation of the Arab League’s United Arab Command has arrived in Damascus to study Syrian defenses on its southern border with Israel, it was reported here today from Damascus. The delegation is headed by General Abdel Moneim Riyad, chief of staff of the command. At the same time, Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Semenov arrived in Damascus on an official visit, after visiting Egypt. He will reportedly discuss Syria’s request for more Soviet weapons, particularly modern fighter planes, Syria has a substantial number of Soviet-made MIG 17s in its air force.
